In response to the Government’s initiative to introduce the ‘Right to Build’ for self-builders in Dartmoor National Park, we have developed a design for a family home for local people who are working in the area, but are unable to buy their own home. The goal is to create a pilot housing scheme, which can help and assist young families to find land and build their own eco-friendly, zero carbon and affordable homes. The scheme will provide housing for families who are currently in low wage employment, reducing the numbers relying on the provision of affordable housing or rented accommodation. Each house will have a compost toilets, harvest rainwater and clean its gray water via reed bed ponds. The aspiration is to develop land by bringing much greater benefit to the surrounding eco system than its current use.
